Help Wanted!

By Paula Mitchell-Bentley | Filed in Facebook, Parents Committee, volunteering

Looking for a parent volunteer who is computer savvy and set up to be online frequently to take over both this website and the facebook account next year.  There are frequent posts that need to be included to keep everyone up to date on all of the cadet activities.  The website and facebook account are especially important because nearly all of the parents no longer attend the parent’s committee meetings so this site and the emails from staff are the only ways that they really know what is going on.

Duties include:

  • Updating calendar with times, dates, activities, meeting places and such as needed (at least once a week)
  • Making sure that the calendar stays up to date with frequent changes
  • Posting about all the fundraisers going on throughout the year
  • Updating facebook with cadet activity reminders, donor thank-yous, etc.
  • Keeping the donor page up to date with links to all donor pages as recognition
  • Posting about summer camps, having links to the various forms for volunteers, camp applications, etc.
  • Staying on top of any Cadet League contests and posting about how to enter and any applicable deadlines
  • Going with the flow because dates and details frequently change
  • Probably should attend most, if not all, parent committee meetings to stay on top of what is going on or at least talk to someone who’s in the loop

Volunteer must:

  • Exist (LOL)
  • Have a sense of humor:)
  • Pay attention to detail because this is where many cadets/parents/volunteers get their information from.  If the info is posted wrong then the cadets won’t have the correct information!
  • Have a basic knowledge of facebook, decent writing abilities, and basic computer knowledge — I will train anyone willing on basic WordPress functionality, set them up on facebook and on the website!
  • Be committed to doing it for all of next year — DO NOT volunteer for this if it’s something you’re only going to do for a few weeks and then give up on — once you’re in, you’re in:)
  • Be willing to find and train a replacement

I do not think my son will be part of the cadet program next year (although he might change his mind — kids are great at keeping us on our toes) so I will not be updating these sites next year.  I’d like to find someone willing to learn the ropes in the next few months.  I promise it’s not rocket science but it is a bit of work and must be kept up to date.  This is not something that a cadet should be doing — definitely needs an adult parent volunteer to fulfill this role.  Drop me a line at pjkmitchell@hotmail.com if you’ve got any questions or are interested.

50/50 Ticket Sales

By Paula Mitchell-Bentley | Filed in Events, volunteering

The 3016 Airdrie Army Cadets are holding a 50/50 raffle draw.  The proceeds of this fundraiser will be split 50/50 between the cadet corps and whoever’s name is drawn.  The tickets are being sold 1 for $2, 3 for $5 or 12 for $20.  Last year we did a similar fundraiser and the winner collected over $800!!  Great chance to win some serious cash and contribute to a very valuable youth cause.

Please contact us at airdriecadets@gmail.com to purchase tickets or if parents would like to get some tickets to sell on behalf of the cadets.  One of our parent’s, Brent Marchessault, has graciously offered to take care of this fundraising event on behalf of the cadets again.  Thanks so much Mr. Marchessault!!

It would be great to see a lot of participation by all of the cadet families in this fundraising event.  Fundraisers such as these are the reason why parents aren’t on the hook to pay for all of the field training exercises, building rent (which has tripled recently), transportation costs, training costs, uniforms, equipment, etc.  Even families who may not be able to buy tickets can contribute to the cause by helping to sell the tickets.  Please email us for information on picking up tickets to sell or purchase.

**The draw for this event will be held on Feb. 11**

NOTE: This event is open to people even outside of the Airdrie area.  The tickets have a space to write the purchaser’s phone number down.  They DO NOT need to be present to win.  We have people purchasing tickets as far away as Nova Scotia.

Parent Volunteers Needed for FTX

By Paula Mitchell-Bentley | Filed in Events, volunteering

Captain Petcoff is looking for 4 or so parents to volunteer to go on next month’s Field Training Exercises. The senior cadets will be doing survival training and the junior cadets (and those who haven’t already completed it) will be doing hunter’s education training. They are mainly looking for parents to help with meal preparation. Please contact Captain Petcoff or Captain Mark if you have any questions or would like to volunteer to attend this camp. It is being held at Alford Lake which is near Caroline.

Only the senior cadets will be sleeping outside but all attendants need to bring sleeping bags.

Royal Canadian Legion Logo

The Airdrie Legion has asked for approx 5 cadets to help at the Legion on Dec 3, 9, and 10 from 6-9ish (1800-2100).  Dress is civilians.

If you have nothing to do on those evenings, this would go towards the cadets volunteer hours. Also there might not be a staff member at each event so cadets must behave theirselves in a appropriate manner. Nicole Toovey (parent of 2 cadets) will be at every event, she works at the legion.

Please let Capt. Mark know A.S.A.P. if you can help with this.

A Big Shout Out to Local Businesses

By Paula Mitchell-Bentley | Filed in Donations, volunteering

A few of us have been working hard trying to round up donations for our two silent auction events and I just wanted to give a big thank you to all of the businesses and individuals who have so generously and willingly donated to our group.  Let’s try to support these businesses as much as possible as a way of giving thanks for all of their support!  Many of them are small business owners who could benefit greatly by keeping our shopping at a local level.  For a look at our (growing) list of donors and sponsors, please check out our 2011 -2012 Donor Page on the website.  Remember that we are still looking for donations and would love to have more parents and cadets involved in soliciting them.  All you have to do is hand them a donation letter and maybe chat them up a little bit about how great our group of kids is!!  Please contact me at pjkmitchell@hotmail.com if you have any questions or items that you would like to contribute to our events.  These two silent auctions are some of our only fundraisers.

How to Volunteer!

By Paula Mitchell-Bentley | Filed in Notices, Parents Committee, volunteering

We’ve requested parent volunteers for a couple of events coming up (FTX and poppy tagging) so I thought I’d repost some information on volunteering with our cadet corps.

While many of the main operations of the corps are generally handled by Cadet Corps Instructors, we also rely on our large pool of volunteers to fill in as needed and the Airdrie Army Cadets are proud to have a high percentage of parents that are certified cadet volunteers (CVs).

Volunteers help with a wide variety of tasks including:

  • Parent’s Association
  • Helping with camps/FTX’s
  • Poppy Tagging
  • Helping at the Legion
  • Running this website and the facebook page
  • Handing out supplies
  • A variety of other tasks as needed

The Airdrie Army Cadets consistently has one of the highest rates of registered volunteers in the province.  We could not run the Airdrie Army Cadets at the current level without a lot of volunteers.  We encourage parents (and grandparents) to get certified to volunteer.

All volunteers are carefully screened.  If you would like to volunteer, please submit the following:

Please remember that we could not run our group as successfully without the help of all of the adults involved.  On a personal note as a mom, I’ve always found that they really appreciate me being involved in their activities and interests.  It makes me a part of their life and shows them that I’m interested in what interests them.  Whether you’re able to volunteer a little bit or a lot, please do!!

Poppy Tagging Sign-Up

By Mark Bentley | Filed in Notices, volunteering

Captain Mark will have the sign up sheet available tonight for the poppy tagging events which will be held next weekend (Nov. 4-6).  Cadets please sign up for a shift when you are available.  We are also still looking for some parent volunteers to help with Poppy Tagging at Costco Cross Iron Mills on Nov 4, 5 and 6th.  The times are:

  • Friday, Nov 4th : 4-7 PM
  • Saturday, Nov 5: 10AM – 7PM
  • Sunday, Nov 6: 10AM – 7PM

This event is very important to the Canadian Legion and the money raised by the legion from this is used to help vets in need.  If you have any questions about remembrance day or the poppy fund, there’s a page on the legion website here that’s got lots of great questions and answers!  Just scroll down the page until it says : “Poppy and Remembrance”.Royal Canadian Legion Logo
